The technology news outlet "The Information" reported that Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has informed some shareholders that the company is considering restructuring its management into a for-profit entity, independent of the control of the current non-profit board.

According to the report, which cited an informed source, Altman mentioned on Friday that one of the scenarios being considered is the creation of a for-profit company that could be utilized by competitors such as Anthropic and xAI.

"The Information" noted that these restructuring discussions are ongoing smoothly, and Altman and the other executives may ultimately decide on a completely different approach.

In a statement to Reuters, OpenAI said, "We remain focused on developing AI that benefits everyone. Our core mission as a non-profit remains, and that will continue."
